The pearl story

From an undrilled parcel to a finished strand.

01 — Sourcing

Bought loose, before anyone strings them.

We buy undrilled parcels directly from farms and old Hyderabad trade houses, then sort by hand. Most of a parcel never makes it into a mala.

02 — Grading

Lustre first. Everything else follows.

Each pearl is judged under daylight for depth of nacre and the sharpness of its reflection. Surface and shape are matched afterwards, bead to bead.

03 — Knotting

Knotted on silk, one pearl at a time.

A knot between every pearl so nothing rubs and nothing scatters if the thread gives. A long strand takes the better part of a day.

Depth of coating — what makes it last.

Grading

Four grades, and what separates them.

The scale the trade uses. We tell you which one you're looking at before you ask.

  • Excellent — reflections appear bright and sharp.
  • Surface quality 95% clean or better.
  • Extremely thick nacre. Tahitian pearls run a minimum of 0.8mm; white and golden South Sea average 2–4mm.
  • Very good — reflections appear bright and near sharp.
  • Surface quality 90–95% clean or better.
  • Akoya pearls carry thick nacre at 0.4mm or more. Freshwater pearls are solid, with nacre that differs from saltwater.
  • Good — reflections are bright but not sharp, and slightly hazy at the edges.
  • Surface quality 75–80% clean or better.
  • Nacre is solid on freshwater pearls, whose composition differs from saltwater. On Akoya it may be thin in places.
  • Fair — reflections are weak and blurred.
  • Blemish-free across 60% of the pearl's surface.
  • Nacre is visibly thin on Akoya pearls, and the nucleus shows under some lighting.
